 Spider Identification & Prevention

What are spiders?

Spiders are the eight-legged creatures that have been the star of many horror movies. The spider's unsettling appearance and quick, startling movements make them something that most people don't want in their homes. Besides having eight legs, spiders have two body segments, many eyes, and the ability to produce silk. Spiders use this silk to build webs, line their burrows, capture prey, or move from place to place.

Spiders live all around us and regularly invade our homes, businesses, outbuildings, and yards. Some of the more common species we come across in our area of Alabama include:

  • Black widow spiders

  • Brown widow spiders

  • Wolf Spiders

  • Jumping spiders

  • Cellar spiders

Are spiders dangerous?

Some spider species can be dangerous if their venom is strong enough to create health problems in people. Black widow spiders and brown widow spiders are both examples of dangerous spiders. However, most of the spiders that we come across on a day-to-day basis including wolf spiders, jumping spiders, and cellar spiders are harmless and pose no threat to people or our property.

Whether considered dangerous or nuisance pests, spiders are beneficial as they feed on and help to control populations of other nuisance insects, including mosquitoes. It is only when spiders invade our personal spaces or take over our homes and yards in large numbers that they become an unwelcome presence.

Why do I have a spider problem?

The answer to why spiders are a problem on your property is fairly straight forward: there are plenty of insects for them to hunt and secluded spaces for them to hide or build webs. The truth of the matter is that most of our yards, homes, and outbuildings provide the perfect environment for spiders to thrive.

Where will I find spiders?

As long as plenty of prey is available, spiders prefer to live outdoors. Spiders typically only move inside when following their prey. As overwintering insects move inside for the winter, so do spiders! As their name suggests, cellar spiders do enjoy living inside and live in basements and other humid areas of a home on a year-round basis.

When living outdoors, spiders take up residence in sheltered areas that allow them to stay out of sight of unsuspecting prey. Some spiders lay in wait on their webs and wait for insects to come by and become trapped. Others such as wolf spiders chase after their prey and only use their web as a resting or hiding spot.

Common places spiders live and build their burrow or webs include:

  • Gardens

  • Woodpiles or rock piles

  • Inside of empty potted plants or other containers

  • In tall grass and overgrown vegetation

  • In shrubs or bushes

  • In sheds, garages, and other outbuildings

  • In attics, basements, wall voids, and closets

  • In the corners of rooms and window sills

  • Under furniture

How can I prevent spiders in the future?

To help you stop spiders from taking over your Alabama property, we want to offer some easy-to-execute pest prevention tips:

  • Spiders prefer quiet, undisturbed areas. Regularly clean your home including closets, basements, storage areas, and the spaces under furniture.

  • As soon as you see a spider web in your home, immediately remove it; this tends to annoy spiders and makes them want to find somewhere else to live!

  • Reduce insect activity in and around your home by keeping lids on trash cans and recycling bins.

  • Inspect your home's exterior, sealing any entry points you find to prevent spiders, and their insect prey, from moving inside.

  • Cut back overgrown grass or shrubbery away from your home's exterior walls.
